Chain Of Gold - Cassandra Clare Review

13/01/2022

From internationally bestselling author Cassandra Clare comes the first novel in a brand new Shadowhunters trilogy.

Evil is hiding in plain sight and the only thing more dangerous than fighting demons is falling in love. Cordelia Carstairs is a Shadowhunter, a warrior trained since childhood to battle demons. When her father is accused of a terrible crime, she and her brother travel to Edwardian London in hopes of preventing the family's ruin. Cordelia's mother wants to marry her off, but Cordelia is determined to be a hero rather than a bride. Soon Cordelia encounters childhood friends James and Lucie Herondale and is drawn into their world of glittering ballrooms, secret assignations, and supernatural salons, where vampires and warlocks mingle with mermaids and magicians. All the while, she must hide her secret love for James, who is sworn to marry someone else. But Cordelia's new life is blown apart when a shocking series of demon attacks devastate London. These monsters are nothing like those Shadowhunters have fought before - these demons walk in daylight, strike down the unwary with incurable poison, and seem impossible to kill.

London is immediately quarantined. Trapped in the city, Cordelia and her friends discover that their own connection to a dark legacy has gifted them with incredible powers - and force a brutal choice that will reveal the true cruel price of being a hero.

Cassandra Clare’s books got me into reading in my teenage years. I saw them as my safe haven when I was at school whenever I was heaving a rough time. Her books still got a special place in my heart and that will never change. I was really looking forward to the release of Chain of Gold. I have multiple versions of it by now ( I kid you not) and I finally had the time to read it after a year. I was so stoked to start this one.

I must admit that it is not one of her best books she has written. In my opinion are The Infernal Devices and The mortal instrument series better than this one. I wasn’t too fond of The Dark Artefices either, and I hoped this book wil bring back the feelings I had when reading TMI and TID. But unfortunately it did not and that kind of dissapointed me.

Nevertheless this book looks really gorgeous. The story itself is really well written as we are know from Cassandra Clare. It starts of rather slowly but the story is fascinating in its own uniqe way. There are some new characters and some familiar ones, which makes it kind of feel like coming home.

I really enjoyed this story although I kind of expected more from it. I really am looking forward to read the second book in the series.
