Nick & Charlie - Alice Oseman review

22/04/2021

A short novella based on the beloved characters from the graphic novel Heartstopper - soon to be a major Netflix series - and Alice Oseman's debut novel Solitaire.

Absence makes the heart grow fonder, right? CHARLIE: I have been going out with Nick Nelson for two years. He likes rugby, Formula 1, dogs, the Marvel universe, the sound felt-tips make on paper, rain and drawing on shoes. He also likes me. NICK: Things me and Charlie Spring do together include: Watch films. Sit in the same room on different laptops. Text each other from different rooms. Make out. Make food. Make drinks. Get drunk. Talk. Argue. Laugh. Maybe we're kind of boring. But that's fine with us. Everyone knows that Nick and Charlie are the perfect couple - that they're inseparable. But now Nick is leaving for university, and Charlie will be left behind at Sixth Form. Everyone's asking if they're staying together, which is a stupid question - they're 'Nick and Charlie' for God's sake! But as the time to say goodbye gets inevitably closer, both Nick and Charlie question whether their love is strong enough to survive being apart. Or are they delaying the inevitable? Because everyone knows that first loves rarely last forever...

I first fell in love with Nick and Charlie when I read the heartstopper series. They are so cute and they seem very realistic. So I knew I had to get all the books as possible by allice oseman. So I did buy them all (at least I think I've got them all).

I adored this book. Because the characters seem so real to me. Charlie's the cute insecure boy who's afraid to lose the love of his life. This fear pushes Nick away and makes everything much worse. We see them both struggle with their feelings and thoughts on the whole 'University' situation. They seem like the perfect couple, but the schoolyear comes to an end. This puts a lot of pressure on both of their shoulders. This whole situation and both characters are so realistic, and it's easy for the reader to connect with them. This makes this story so great and touching. I couldn't put it down anymore once I started it.

Another great story, written by the amazing Alice Oseman. She definitely deserves an award for her stories!
