Poisoned - Jennifer Donnelly review
Beautiful Sophie, with lips as red as blood, skin as
pale as snow, and hair as dark as night, is about to come of age and
inherit her father's throne. But Sophie's stepmother wants rid of her -
beautiful she may be, but too weak and foolish to reign. And Sophie
believes her, as she believes all the things that have been said about
her - all the poisonous words people use to keep
girls like her from becoming too powerful, too strong.
When the
huntsman carries out his orders of killing Sophie, she finds a fire
burning inside her that will not be extinguished, and sets off to
reclaim what was taken from her.
Jennifer Donnelly turns her feminist eye to this most delicious of fairy tales and shows Snow White as she's never been seen before.

I've always been a fan of fairytales. I even enjoy some retellings from time to time. I couldn't resist this pretty one, once I came across it. And let's be honest, who wouldn't want to be a princess?
I must admit that I expected it to be something entirely else. It kind of looks like 'Snowwhite', but not too much. Much less than I expected it to be when I started the story. But I must admit that I really liked this about the story. It gave the story an extra touch and made it just a little bit different.
Sophie's character looks a lot like Snowwhite's. She can only see the good in people and that makes her kind of naïve. Her character's nice to read, which makes it easy for the reader to connect with her. I really liked the queen's character. She has a strong, character, but you can read between the lines that she's very insecure. She's not all evil. The author had a nice way of expressing this.
What I kind of disliked during the story was that Sophie has way too many 'nearly-dead' experiences. Once or twice could have been fun and a nice twist to the story. She has way too many nearly-dead experiences, which got kind of boring sometimes.
The story itself is so well written and detailed. I was immediately drawn into the story and I really enjoyed it. I liked it very much and I definitely recommend this one. The scenes are vividly written, which made me feel like I was really there sometimes.
